Shady Delights: Maidenhair Ferns

Most people are familiar with Maidenhair ferns from seeing them in garden centers for indoor use. But did you know it’s a great plant for the shady, moist garden, too? Northern Maidenhair fern is native to our area. Unlike other ferns which can be easily divided and transplanted (note, only from your neighbor’s garden, NEVER the woods) this fern is not keen on being moved. It’s best to purchase it from a reputable grower. Unlike our common garden fern that can take over the world (at least it seems like it) maidenhair spreads slowly, without causing distress to the gardener.

It prefers a rich, humus soil that remains moist.
It is short, only two feet tall and whimsical in appearance. If you use this fern, give a place of distinction in the garden: it’s one you will want to admire often.
